Third Eye

When we sit in Meditation silently and calmly in an easy posture, we close our eyes gently and a thick darkness engulfs us all around. There is no glimmer of light. Not only that, a caravan of thoughts comes in from somewhere, elsewhere and nowhere. There appears to be no end to it. We are led astray in the deep forest of thoughts. More we try to get rid of them, more we indulge in them. These endless thoughts and the pitch darkness is the creation of mind which is restlessness by nature. It dwells either in past or in future. They both are false. The former is gone for ever and the later has not arrived. Mind does not stay in present because there is no space in present for thoughts to jag around. It is a very complex thing and we can't hold it in hand or put in test-tube. So any attempt to control the mind and remove the darkness will be futile.

Meditation will remove the darkness and mind will become no-mind. We all have got a third eye which is hidden behind the Himalayan mind and endless darkness had gripped us from all sides. Through regular and persistent meditation, this wall is razed and hidden third eye opens but there must be strenuous and continuous effort in meditation and not the Luke warm effort of 'stop & start' sort. No effort is made to control the mind. We are just to watch and watch the mind without being indulged in its doings. We must not say, “Ah! This is a good thought. I must have it and discard the bad one.” Then we shall be caught be in mind's wanderings. Just be a neutral energy. Be a Witness, a Sakshi just like a mirror.

No mirror says that you are rich or poor, handsome or ugly, wise or fool, and standing on feet or head. It simply projects. So without any condemnation or appreciation, we go on watching our thoughts, our mind continuously and uninterruptedly just like a continuous stream of oil poured from one vessel to another. Then inner eye opens up and starts working and a voice rushes out from the heart of aspirant.

दिल के आईने में है तस्वीर-ए-यार
जब ज़रा गर्दन झुकाई देख ली

Our Real Self is not residing in seventh heaven. He is within all of us and we all have got third eye to have His clear vision but third eye is hidden behind mind. Mind was our servant and it was supposed to be at our beck and call but unfortunately it overpowered us so much that we considered ourselves nothing but mind and forgot all about our mastership, Real Self and Third eye. So first we have to understand ourselves who we are and what mind is – Master or slave. We are not just the combination of few molecules to be disintegrated sooner or later. We are the All-Existent, All-Knowledge and All Bliss. I and my father are one. He and I are one. He is not away from me.

मैं और मेरा यार इक बस्ती में बसते हैं
किस्मत की क्या खूबी है कि दर्शन को तरसते हैं

I and He reside in the same place but the rascal ego stands in way.

Meditation removes the thick layers of darkness spread by the daunting mind and third eye starts opening and paves the way for the vision of reality. Meditation is no-mind. Mind cannot create meditation. It is getting out of the mind becoming the watcher of mind witnessing all that goes through the mind – desires, imagination, thoughts, dreams, ambitions, anxieties, worries and all the dual throng of joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, sun and shade. Meditation witnesses all that goes in and around mind. You just become the witness SAKSHI. Slowly and slowly this witnessing becomes more strong, centred and oriented. Suddenly you understand that you are not the mind. You are the witness; mind is outside, you as anything else.

When that stage is reached, we witness everything that is going on within the body without being involved in it and being totally indifferent to them. We witness joy and we witness sorrow. We witness pleasure and we witness pain. We witness life and we witness even death. When we witness, we dis-identify ourselves from the body and mind and from everything. Witnessing spreads all over within. Only witnessing remains…..witness of witness…..witness of witness and so on. This is the supreme stage of meditation. When witnessing is 100%, mind disappears and Third eye appears giving us the clear vision of Reality.

A very very close watch and regular and persistent meditation is required to make mind our servant and keep it away from the Third Eye. A subdued mind is just like a serpent suffering from starvation and cold appearing to be dead. Once feed and heat are provided it starts hissing, gets life and even bites. Once the poisonous fangs are taken out, it does not matter whether the serpent is alive or dead. So once we get enlightenment, Self-Realisation and Third Eye bring the clear vision of Reality, mind will be without poisonous fangs and will be at our beck and call. Then we can safely bring the mind in, till then, we have to be in the state of no-mind. We have to witness our mind and this witnessing has to be the last 24X7 hours a day whereas in the beginning we bring in watching as a guest. Witnessing can be called the seed and enlightenment the flower but we have to start with witnessing strengthen it, water it and nourish it. This is meditation.

In meditation, we start watching with eyes closed and being awake all the time. This watching changes into witnessing while we watch without evaluation and judgment. There is thick darkness, no glimmer of light, stillness of graveyard and continuous flow of thoughts. We get involved into them and lose our state of witnessing. Through regular and persistent meditation, thoughts will diminish and disappear and mind will become no-mind. Third eye hidden behind mind will appear with full brightness and the aspirant will have the clear vision of Reality. There will be no more gloom and doom for him. Mind will be like a snake without poisonous fangs incapable of dragging him into dead past or some unforeseen future. He lives in the present living TOTALLY in every moment without caring for the next moment.

The aspirant leads a blissful life devoid of any anxiety and worry. Meditation is such a gift that Third eye opens and takes us to our own source and Real Self which is All Existent, All knowledge and all Bliss. The devotee feels His presence all the time. He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. The voice comes from innermost shrine of aspirant:-
